Anecia Nelson, 93

Anecia Nelson died April 4, 2008, at Kanakanak Hospital with her family at her side. Because birth records were not accurately kept in the early 1900s, her family believed her age to be about 93. Juneau lists Nelson’s birth date as Jan. 18, 1922, in which case she was 86.

Funeral services were held April 7, 2008, at the Ekwok School gymnasium in Ekwok. Nelson was buried next to her husband, Alex Nelson Sr., at the Russian Orthodox St. John the Baptist cemetery.

Nelson was born to Sophie and George Nicholai in Ekwok. She married Alex Nelson on March 6, 1934, at the Russian Orthodox Church in Nushagak. She and her husband and family resided in Ekwok.

In her younger years, the family would move to Kanakanak during the summer to put up subsistence fish for the winter while her husband went out commercial fishing. Her family recalled that she loved her subsistence way of life, Native food, picking berries, putting up smoked salmon and living off the land. She also loved gardening, especially beautiful flowers. She made beautiful mukluks, and she loved making Native crafts, fur hats, kakiviks, knitting socks, mitten and scarves and crocheting.

She warmly invited people to come visit and she would cook for them. She loved caring for and being with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She had a forgiving spirit, not holding anything against anyone who offended her family or herself. Nelson was a devoted Russian Orthodox Christian.

Her family said, "Mom, Gram, Great-Grandma, and Great-Great Grandma, we thank God for giving you to us for all these years. Thank you for the wisdom you have taught us, for your love and caring ways. Till we meet again."

Anecia Nelson will dearly be missed by the family and friends who loved her, they said.

Nelson is survived by her children, George Nelson Sr. and wife Patsy, of Koliganek, Alex Nelson Jr., of Ekwok, Thomas Nelson Sr., of Ekwok; two adopted grandchildren, Molly Griechen and husband, Gust W. Griechen III, of Dillingham, and Robert Nelson and wife, Juanita, of Ekwok; 17 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren.

Nelson was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sophie Nicholai; husband, Alex Nelson Sr.; daughters, Mary Nelson, Martha Larson and Helen Jensen; sisters, Mary Acovak and Massa Ace; brother, Wassillie Nicholai; son-in-law, Andy Larson Sr.; and daughter-in-law, Nastasia Nelson.
