Art opportunity for photographers, kids
The Alaska Ocean Film Festival is coming Jan. 17; and as part of the festivities, the Dillingham Arts Council is hosting the “Bristol Bay People’s Choice Photograph Awards” and the Friends of the Library is holding a “Children's Art Show.”
Photographers of all types are encouraged to submit their favorite ocean-related shots in the categories of oceanscape, sunset, fishing and culture. Submissions should be made in JPG format to this informal and fun photo contest to Todd Radenbaugh at bftar@uaf.edu or call 842-5109. Photos will be shown before the short films.

Wholesale gift show
The 25th annual Wholesale Alaskan Gift Show will take place 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 16 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Dena’ina Convention Center in Anchorage. The event is for exhibitors to make contact with buyers who place orders for merchandise for their selling season. It is not open to the public, attendees must be qualified buyers. Dillingham legislative info
The Dillingham legislative information office is opened and the staff is preparing for the upcoming legislative session, which begins Jan. 20. Science camp scholarships
Two Alaska high school seniors will have an opportunity to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals at the upcoming National Youth Science Camp.
The camp will be held in West Virginia in the summer of 2009. Applications are currently being accepted for two full scholarships that will be awarded to Alaska high school seniors.
The nearly month-long camps will include lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation, overnight expeditions into the Monongahela National Forest, and a visit to Washington, D.C.
The selected delegates must not only demonstrate academic achievement in science, but also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership. Delegates arrive in Charleston, W.Va., on July 1, and depart on July 25.
Applications must be received by Jan. 23.

UA seeks photos, videos from youths
Young people can show off their visual talents and help create a pictorial archive of Alaska during an upcoming competition.
The University of Alaska International Polar Year Young Researchers’ Network is sponsoring a photo and video contest to document today’s Alaska.
“International Polar Year is our chance to show Alaska to the world,” said network member and contest organizer Kelly Newman.
The contest is open to students and the public, and will culminate in a digital archive. Photos and videos may be submitted through Feb. 16 in the following categories: discovering the Arctic, my life in the North, Alaska’s inconvenient truths, and experiencing the wild.
Winners will be showcased in a film and photo festival this spring in Fairbanks. Prizes will be awarded in student and non-student categories.
