Jalyn Paine and Cate Gomez made sure everyone took notice of the wrestling talent in the Bristol Bay region of the state this past weekend. Paine and Gomez were among a handful of area girls to turn in impressive outings at the Lancer Smith Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Wasilla.

Paine registered the area's best finish in the girls' division. She wrestled her way to a 3-1 record and finished third in the girls' 220-pound classification. She finished off her outing by pinning West Anchorage's Ashlan Tisega in the third-place match on Saturday.

Paine was among three Newhalen High School girls to participate in the tournament. Katie Olympic turned in a 1-2 mark in the 160-pound bracket, while Tasha Hobson was 0-2 in the 145-pound class.

As a team, Newhalen finished 16th in the final team standings, the highest mark of any southwest Alaska squad.

Gomez gave Dillingham fans reason to smile. The DHS standout garnered fifth-place honors in the 106-pound division by grinding out a 4-2 record. She took the honors by downing Colony's Victoria Palin with a pin at the 1:52 mark of their match.

Unalaska's Halle Savage also competed in the tournament.
