Unalaska girls take ninth at state meet
Hailey Wilson legged out a top 50 finish and helped spur the Unalaska Lady Raiders to a ninth-place finish at the 2017 Alaska State Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Anchorage. As a team, the UHS girls had all five runners place in the top 90 and finished just behind Mt. Edgecumbe in the team standings.
A sophomore, Wilson led the Lady Raiders' efforts. She covered the 5-kilometer trail in a time of 23 minutes, 16 seconds and placed 42nd overall.
Teammates Bridget Nalam and Julianne Berikoff also did well. The team's lone senior, Nalam finished 65th in a field of more than 130 runners with a time of 24:10. Berikoff posted a personal-best mark of 25:11 and raced to 78th.
Abigail Go and Kathryn Difuntorum rounded out Unalaska's outing. Go was 89th overall at 25:13. Difuntorum was 90th at 25:27.
Malea Voran of Tanalian near Port Alsworth placed first in the 1A competition with a time of 22 minutes, five seconds, while King Cove's Elaina Mack legged out a career-best time of 22:47 and finished 20th.
King Cove teammate Sadie Newton checked in with a time of 26:18 and finished 106th. Newhalen's Faith Clark also turned in a memorable performance. She placed 44th in the standings with a time of 23:18.
Alasandra Bavilla and Jean Krause represented Dillingham well. Bavilla covered the trail in a time of 24:45 and placed 74th. Krause was 86th at 25:22.
New Stuyahok's Barbara Acovak and Kiara Kapotak placed 105th and 115th, respectively. Sand Point's Lindsey Dushkin was 124th.
