Raiders qualify 11 for state meet
The Unalaska High School cross-country team discovered all they needed to do to get to Anchorage was cover 3.1 miles of ground quickly this past weekend. They covered it in record-setting fashion.
The Raiders shattered seven season and personal records on Saturday afternoon at Kelty Field en route to qualifying 11 runners for the 2017 Alaska State Cross-Country Championships. Overall, Unalaska will be sending six boys and five girls to the state meet, which is scheduled for Sept. 30 at Bartlett High School.
"It was a wet morning, but a good day to race here in Unalaska," said Raiders head coach David Gibson. "All of the athletes should be proud of their accomplishments."
Qualifying to run in the boys' state meet were Michael Pereat, Trevor Wilson, Blaine Henning, Henry Simmonds, Chris Garcia and Talon Shaishnikoff. Bridget Nalam, Hailey Wilson, Abigail Go, Kathryn Difuntorum and Julieanne Berikoff will make up the girls' team.
During the race, Nalam, Decina, Garcia and Jeppesen all posted their best times of their careers. Berikoff and Esnardo both recorded person best marks.
"We are looking forward to seeing some strong finishes on both the boys' and girls' side at the state championship this weekend," Gibson said.
In addition to qualifying 11 runners for the state meet, Gibson said the meet also served as an opportunity to recognize the six seniors who made their final home appearance. Among the seniors are Shaishnikoff, Garcia, Schliebe, Boston, Nalam and team manager Angela Mountain.
