Dillingham and Newhalen wrestling fans had plenty of reason to smile this past weekend as their middle school athletes participated in the 2017 Tanana Invitational Wrestling Championships.

Featuring three wrestlers, the Dillingham Middle School grapplers finished 23rd in the final team standings. Newhalen's Aileen Lester powered her team to 29th.

Calvert placed fifth in the 132-pound classification with a sparkling 6-2 record. He capped his outing by downing Juneau's Cody Morehouse by a 4-0 score in the fifth-place match.

Christian Gardiner also did well for Dillingham. He went 4-2 and finished seventh in the 105-pound classification. He defeated Kodiak's Garritt Roberts at the 33-second mark of their match to net seventh.

Dimitry Hoseth also notched a win for Dillingham. En route to a 1-2 mark, he defeated Palmer's Riley Mullin.

Lester was the high-finishing wrestler from the Southwest region. She placed third in the girls' 128-pound division with a 1-1 record.
