Sand Point, King Cove shine at Battle of the Bay tournament
A couple of the state's top-ranked teams took center stage at the 2017 Battle of the Bay tournament this past weekend in Naknek. Sand Point and King Cove both rolled to the tournament finals in the three-day event.
King Cove, which entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in the latest Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches poll, rode the hot shooting of Colten Mack to clutch wins early in the tournament, which was played in the Bristol Bay High School gym. The T-Jacks defeated Dillingham by a 67-38 clip in their opener. They later defeated Bristol Bay, 69-45.
As a team, Dillingham went 0-3 in the tournament. Following their loss to King Cove, the Wolverines suffered a 53-42 setback to Bristol Bay, and then dropped their final outing to No. 4-ranked Sand Point.
Bristol Bay went 1-2 in the tournament, including a tough 65-60 loss to Sand Point in the opening round on Thursday.
