Dillingham, King Cove compete in 2A state tournament

The Dillingham High School Lady Wolverines and the King Cove Rookies both turned in solid outings this past weekend at the Class 2A state volleyball tournament. The two teams were among eight squads from throughout the state participating in the tournament, which began Dec. 8 at Dimond High School in Anchorage.

Dillingham, under the direction of head coach Meghan Slagle, played well in both of their games.

The Lady Wolverines, who entered the tournament at 19-3 for the year, suffered a tough 3-0 loss to eventual state champion Craig in the first round. Craig captured a 25-22, 25-15, 25-15 win.

With the loss, Dillingham slipped into a consolation showdown with Cordova and fell, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.

Members of the 2016 Dillingham squad include seniors Katie Moore, Charlene Evalt, Emily McArthur and Sierra Roehl, and juniors Britney Dray and Katirina Mowrer. Also on the roster were sophomores Britney George, Kylee Sifsof and Theresa Williams and freshman Abbey Whitcomb.

King Cove got off to an impressive start in the tournament. The Rookies rallied back from a loss in Game 1 of the best-of-five series to Chevak in the first-round match on Thursday, winning 24-26, 25-7, 25-17, 25-15.

The KC girls suffered a tough setback in their semifinal showdown with Petersburg, the eventual Class 2A state runner-up. Petersburg advanced to the finals via a 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 decision.

Following their loss to Petersburg, the Rookies slipped into a consolation showdown with Cordova, which had just beaten Dillingham. Cordova netted a 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16 win.

Members of the King Cove squad included seniors McKenna Gould and Sydney Wilson, and juniors Emmaly Brandell, Kianna Uttecht, Christine Aichele. Also on the roster were sophomore Mariah McCallum, and freshmen Jalaya Duarte, Elaina Mack and Malayna Demoski.
