Dillingham boys win Delta Tournament
February 17th 3:10 pm | Van Williams
The Dillingham High School boys basketball team started faster and finished faster.
Just ask the Glennallen Panthers, who were left in their dust.
Dillingham opened the game by scoring the first seven points and then ended it on a 21-2 run en route to a 58-37 victory in the championship game Saturday night at the Delta Junction Tournament.
"We came out in a full-court press in the fourth quarter," Dillingham coach Deon Lopez said.
Kendell Alvarado led the smothering defensive effort and delivered a monster double-double on offense with 15 points and 18 rebounds.
Other Dillingham double-figure scorers included Jared Miller [15] and Cade Schlagel [10] with Sonny Flensburg close with 9.
The Wolverines came out of the gates fast, taking a 7-0 lead on their way to a 17-8 first quarter lead. They led 27-22 at halftime and 37-25 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was all Dillingham.
The Wolverines improved to 13-2 overall this season.
They got things started off nicely in the first round of the Delta Tournament, running away from the host school's JV team 85-46.
The Schlagel boys nearly out-scored the opposition themselves, with Cade scoring a game-high 24 points and Cole 13 coming off the bench.
Alvarado scored 17 and Miller added 14 points and 6 assists.
In the semifinals, Dillingham beat Noorvik 52-47 behind Justin Braswell's 19-point, 8-rebound performance.
Cade Schlagel grabbed 10 rebounds and did a helluva job guarding Noorvik playmaker Danny Wells, limiting him to 25 points.
He scored 45 the day before.
The Wolverines won the game thanks to a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter.
Miller and Braswell each made the all-tournament team, Alvarado won the tournament's defensive player award and Kenny Savo won the 3-point shooting contest.
