Newhalen boys advance to state final

The Newhalen boys basketball team has advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A state tournament for the third time since 2005.

The Malamutes got back there with a 74-58 victory over Toksook Bay in the semifinals at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Newhalen made 11 3-pointers and took control with a 21-10 run in the second quarter.

Tyler Anelon flirted with a triple-double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing off eight assists.

Other Newhalen players in double digits included Jonathan Tretikoff (16), Eknaty Cobb (15) and Jeffrey Clay (12).

Newhalen will face Aniak Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in the final.
