The final weekend of games for the regular season usually belongs to the seniors on the Dillingham boys basketball team.

But nobody told Kendall Alvarado.

The junior big man led the team in scoring both nights to help the Wolverines sweep neighboring Newhalen.

The sweep earned 3A Dillingham a measure of revenge after losing the Wolverine Classic title game to 1A Newhalen in overtime earlier this season.

That scenario would not repeat itself. Not this time.

Alvarado's high game was a 23-point performance on Friday to highlight a 54-44 win.

Teammates Reed Tennyson (12) and Jared Miller (10) were also in double figures.

Dillingham won 55-27 the next night behind Alvarado's 13 points and Tennyson's 10. Miller and Cade Schlagel chipped in eight apiece.

Newhalen's all-state guard Tyler Anelon scored 14 each night to lead his team.

In reality, though, the weekend was all about the seniors.

Dillingham's trio of Tennyson, Basil Tilden and Even Brandon were honored.

"Best of luck to all three young men," Wolverines coach Deon Lopez said. "Your hard work and leadership will be missed."

Barrus, Rolf lead Lady Wolverines

Dillingham seniors Natalie Barrus and Stacey Rolf did what they do best Saturday night.

Both players pumped in 15 points to pace the Lady Wolverines to a 69-44 win over Newhalen, completing the weekend sweep.

"It was great to see Natalie drop some shots she's been struggling to make throughout the season," Dillingham coach Levi Duca said.

On the first night, Kristin Smeaton's 22 points led the Lady Wolverines to victory.

"Friday we played really lazy and that type of play was able to keep Newhalen in the game," Duca said.

But Smeaton saved the day, taking over despite logging limited playing time due to a sore ankle.

"Not a clean win, but a win nonetheless," the coach said.

The Lady Wolverines were much better in the series finale.

"The defense played really well and we finally got in a rhythm to rebound a bit and that allowed us to stretch it out," Duca said.
