The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced $1.1 million in funding opportunities for priority salmon research, monitoring, and management projects in the Arctic, Yukon, and Kuskokwim region, according to a written statement from the department.

The funding comes from Alaska's Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Funds that are administered by the Department of Fish and Game as the Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund.

The first call for proposals will open on Feb. 12 and will offer approximately $600,000 for salmon stock assessment and management projects with an emphasis on obtaining reliable escapement estimates and other important information on Chinook and chum salmon stocks that have declined.

Projects funded under this call do not require matching funds and must be completed by March 31, 2011. A second call for proposals, planned for late March, will provide an additional $500,000 for priority research and management projects in the region. Projects funded under this call require a 33% contribution in non-federal matching funds (per Congressional requirements) and must be completed by March 31, 2014.

The solicitation of proposals for research projects continues a series of funding opportunities provided in the region by the Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund, including approval in January of $1.6 million for salmon research projects.

Other research funding is in addition to the $1.3 million included in the department's FY2011 budget to improve management of Western Alaska salmon stocks.
